About Bc Forest Discovery Centre
Riding the 2.5 km (1.6 mi) narrow‑gauge railway across the 100‑acre (40 ha) BC Forest Discovery Centre immerses visitors in a living logging museum near Duncan, British Columbia. The century‑old steam locomotive hauls the train past a prefabricated schoolhouse, a trestle over Somenos Lake, and an operational water wheel, while forest trails, a reconstructed fire‑watch tower and nearby Somenos Marsh Wildlife Refuge frame the historic landscape.
History
The BC Forest Discovery Centre originates in 1964, when the institution is recorded as being founded. Collector G.E. (Gerry) Wellburn opens the site in 1965 under the name Cowichan Valley Forest Museum. The museum later adopts the title BC Forest Museum before assuming its current name. Throughout its history the centre remains under the stewardship of its founding organization, expanding to a 100‑acre property that includes a narrow‑gauge heritage railway.
The Trains
The centre’s 3 ft (914 mm) narrow‑gauge line runs 2.5 km (1.6 mi) through the 100‑acre site, linking the reconstructed logging camp with a trestle over Somenos Lake and a historic pre‑fabricated schoolhouse. Its steam roster includes Mayo Lumber Company No. 3 Shay (class B), Hillcrest Lumber Company No. 1 Shay (class B), Cowichan Valley Railway No. 24 Vulcan 0‑4‑0T “Suzie,” and Cowichan Valley Railway No. 25 Vulcan 0‑4‑0T “Samson,” while diesel power is provided by Cowichan Valley Railway No. 23 “Sandy” Plymouth 8‑short‑ton, Cowichan Valley Railway No. 27 “Handy Andy” speeder, and British Columbia Forest Products No. 9 Whitcomb 0‑4‑4‑0.
