About Middleton Railway Museum Society
Inside Middleton's restored 1916 railway station, this volunteer-driven museum captures the era when diesel engines were displacing steam across Nova Scotia. A large model railway of the Annapolis Valley is the standout attraction, surrounded by rolling stock, a 75-foot turntable, and an extensive collection of Dominion Atlantic Railway artifacts. Recent arrivals, including a vintage steam locomotive and the century-old CNR 7260 switcher, keep the displays growing year after year.
History
The Middleton Railway Museum occupies a Canadian Pacific Railway station built in 1916, the third station to serve the Annapolis Valley town of Middleton, Nova Scotia; Canadian Pacific closed it in 1990 after freight traffic to Middleton on the Dominion Atlantic Railway ended. A community museum named the Memory Lane Railway Museum opened in the building in 1993, and the Middleton Railway Museum Society was established on July 7, 2017, to run the operation. Recent years brought a wave of acquisitions: a locomotive from the defunct Upper Clements Park in 2020, then a steam locomotive, tender, and boxcar from the Museum of Industry in Stellarton in December 2022, soon followed by the 117-year-old CNR 7260, a switching engine that worked Bridgewater through the 1940s. A fire during renovations in April 2023 caused extensive smoke damage and kept the building shut for over a year, yet the museum still drew more than 2,000 visitors across its 60-day 2024 season, when it also received a donated CN caboose. The fully restored station held its official opening on June 7, 2025.
Nearby
Middleton styles itself the Heart of the Valley, sitting on the north bank of the Annapolis River near the centre of Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, at the half-way point between Halifax and Yarmouth on Highway 101. The Dominion Atlantic and CN rail corridors that once crossed here are now province-owned recreational trails, good for a walk after the museum, and local green spaces include Centennial Park, Riverside Park, Rotary Park, and Cottage Cove Provincial Park.
