About Colorado Railroad Museum
Colorado Railroad Museum preserves and interprets railroading in the Rocky Mountain region on a 15-acre property in Golden. The current visitor page describes more than 100 locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses, an 1880s-replica Depot Museum, an active restoration roundhouse, an outdoor railyard, a depot store, and model-railroad displays.
The strongest connection to Canyon Spirit is interpretive rather than operational. A traveler can compare today's long-distance daylight journey from Denver Union Station with Colorado narrow-gauge equipment, the state's mining, agriculture, and tourism story, and the preservation work visible in Golden. The museum is independent from Canyon Spirit, and neither ticket includes the other.
Regular grounds hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Monday and named holiday closures. General admission does not guarantee a train ride. The official ride calendar publishes specific diesel, Galloping Goose, steam, Thomas, and holiday programs with different access and ticket rules; special-event dates can replace ordinary admission. The footer's generic 'Open Daily' line conflicts with the detailed visitor page, so this guide follows the page's explicit Tuesday-Sunday rule and recommends a live recheck.
What stands out
Walk the 15-acre railyard
More than 100 historic locomotives and cars make the outdoor collection the main planning anchor, with weather and restoration activity part of the visit.
See preservation work in context
The Roundhouse and collection connect mechanical restoration with the operating steam, diesel, and Galloping Goose programs on selected dates.
Read Colorado through railroads
Current depot exhibits include Mexican and Mexican American trackworker history and Colorado's mining, agriculture, and tourism story.
Choose a dated ride deliberately
Diesel coaches, Galloping Goose motorcars, steam events, Thomas, and Polar Express programs have different calendars, capacities, and access limits.
Pair it with the train
Why it belongs in a Canyon Spirit: Rockies to the Red Rocks trip
OpenStreetMap routing measured about 13.6 driving miles and roughly 21 minutes from Denver Union Station under baseline conditions. Use it as a separate half-day before or after Canyon Spirit, leave traffic and parking margin, and never treat the museum as a walkable station amenity.

Useful answers
Frequently asked questions
When is Colorado Railroad Museum open?
The detailed current visitor page says Tuesday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with Monday and named holiday closures. Recheck because a generic footer still says 'Open Daily.'
Does general admission include a train ride?
No. Ordinary rides use separately dated inventory and add-on fares; certain special events sell admission-and-ride combinations under their own rules.
Are museum train rides wheelchair-accessible?
The museum says its historic-coach rides behind diesel-electric locomotives are wheelchair-accessible. Galloping Goose rides are not. Call about a specific date, boarding method, grounds route, or device.
Can I walk there from Denver Union Station?
No. It is in Golden, about 13.6 driving miles west in the checked route. Arrange separate ground transportation and allow traffic margin.
Is Colorado Railroad Museum part of Canyon Spirit?
No. It is an independent nonprofit museum with separate tickets, hours, contacts, and operations.
How long should I allow?
Three to four hours is a practical plan for the depot, outdoor collection, model railroads, restoration context, and a booked ride. Special events can require longer.
