About Eastern California Museum

Eastern California Museum is the host site for the Carson & Colorado Railway, No. 18’s Larry Peckham Engine House, and the short museum-yard track used on special operating days. The county museum is at 155 North Grant Street in Independence. It is not merely a nearby stop: its historic equipment yard, staff, Friends organization, and grounds are part of the practical setting for the railway experience.

The museum was founded in 1928 and has been operated by Inyo County since 1968. Its scope runs from Mono Lake to Death Valley and includes Eastern Sierra natural history, mining, water, mountaineering, Indigenous history and culture, Manzanar, local communities, archives, photographs, and historic equipment. The current county page highlights roughly 400 Owens Valley Paiute and Panamint Shoshone baskets, hundreds of photographs donated by people formerly incarcerated at Manzanar, a searchable online collection of more than 10,000 items, and the Mary DeDecker Native Plant Garden.

A major limitation is visible in 2026: the historic west wing has been under construction since March for the Re-Imagine Eastern California Museum project, with a new gallery experience expected in spring 2027. The county currently identifies the Indigenous Lifeways Gallery, reference library, research files, museum bookstore, and outdoor resources as remaining open. Do not assume every legacy exhibit is available; call about a specific collection or accessibility need.

Regular public hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with Monday and county-holiday closures. Admission is free and donations are optional. The museum welcomes groups with advance notice and recommends one to two hours for organized visits. Carson & Colorado operating days are separately announced and do not turn the museum’s normal weekly hours into a daily train schedule.
