About Flume Gorge

Flume Gorge is the strongest outdoor extension to a Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train or Granite State Railway day because it interprets the same Pemigewasset landscape from the trail rather than a railcar. The natural gorge extends about 800 feet beneath Mount Liberty, with Conway-granite walls rising roughly 70 to 90 feet and narrowing to 12 feet in places.

The current visitor route is a full two-mile self-guided loop. The former short trail and rim path are closed, so visitors should not plan on a brief partial walk. The loop combines packed gravel, boardwalk, moderate uphill sections, and many stairs and usually takes about 1.5 hours before photo stops, ticket check-in, and parking time.

NH State Parks sells timed arrival windows and warns that in-person entry is not guaranteed. This makes the gorge a better pre-train activity than a last-minute stop: reserve an early window, leave weather and traffic margin, and protect the selected railway’s boarding time. The park is separate from both rail operators.
