About Fred Schmidt Railroad Museum
The Fred Schmidt Railroad Museum occupies the former freight room of the same 1887 Rock Island depot used by Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad passengers. It is the most convenient train-first addition to a ride because visitors do not need to relocate or find another parking lot.
The museum honors railroad co-founder Frederick Wingfield Schmidt, whose collecting and restoration work extended from railroading to the Parker carousel and the Arabia steamboat engine. His railroad books and memorabilia formed the core of the display, with additional artifacts contributed by volunteers.
Exhibits include a G-scale model railroad and an operating telegraph that taps out a welcome message in Morse code. Admission is free and donations are accepted; the operator does not publish separate daily museum hours, so confirm access against depot hours and the selected train or event.
