About Gallitzin Tunnels Park & Museum
Gallitzin Tunnels Park & Museum sits at the mountain summit reached by trains climbing west from Horseshoe Curve. The park’s public viewing area faces the active Allegheny Tunnel, giving visitors a close—but safely separated—look at modern Norfolk Southern and Amtrak traffic.
Inside the Community Building, photographs, railroad artifacts, a theater, and the film “Once Upon a Mountain” explain why Gallitzin and its tunnels were strategically important to the Pennsylvania Railroad route. Across the street, a restored 1942 Pennsylvania Railroad caboose is open during staffed museum hours.
This is a railfan viewing and history stop, not an excursion ride. Train frequency, direction, and locomotive type are not guaranteed. Stay in the public park, supervise children, and never enter tracks, tunnel portals, or other railroad property.
