About Galveston Historic Seaport and 1877 ELISSA

Galveston Historic Seaport interprets the port city through Ship to Shore, an immigration experience built around passenger-manifest history and the realities of arriving in Texas during the 1880s.

Its signature artifact is ELISSA, an iron-hulled square-rigged barque launched in 1877, restored by Galveston Historical Foundation beginning in 1978 and returned to active sailing. ELISSA is a National Historic Landmark, the Official Tall Ship of Texas and one of very few surviving ships of her type that still sails.

The current official seaport page publishes Tuesday-Sunday visitor hours and says ELISSA is open for tours. Visitors must use the live official status—not social reports or photographs—to confirm selected-date ship boarding, admission, and any closure.

What stands out

Follow Ship to Shore

Use the immigration experience to connect passenger manifests, an ocean crossing and arrival in 1880s Galveston.

Interpret ELISSA as a working artifact

Understand why the ship may leave the museum: restoration returned her to active sailing rather than permanent static display.

Check boarding before arrival

The current page publishes tours; still verify selected-date boarding, admission, tide-dependent access, and any closure.

Read the rail-to-port landscape

Pair the nearby railroad depot and wharf to see how people and freight transferred between inland lines and Galveston's harbor.

Pair it with the train

Why it belongs in a Galveston Railroad Museum trip

The seaport ranks first after Galveston Railroad Museum because it is about 0.3 mile away and extends the same freight, passenger and migration story from rail yard to working harbor. Plan the two admissions separately and do not assume the short straight-line distance means free parking or a fully step-free ship visit.
