About Little River Railroad & Lumber Company Museum

The Little River Railroad & Lumber Company Museum is an independent nonprofit founded in 1982 to preserve the companies that shaped Townsend and the people who worked for them. The collection uses the relocated Walland depot, a geared locomotive, logging equipment, photographs, documents, and volunteer interpretation.

The railroad and lumber companies were chartered in 1901. The operation acquired nearly 100,000 acres, built about 150 miles of railroad, and cut roughly 560 million board feet over almost four decades. Railroad access also helped mountain tourism grow through services such as the Elkmont Special.

Current 2026 guidance lists free admission with donations appreciated. From May through October the staffed museum is open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. The outdoor grounds and exhibits are always available; November-March is closed off-season except groups by appointment.
