About Cog Railway Museum at Marshfield Base Station
Marshfield Base Station is more than a boarding point. Its free Cog Railway Museum introduces the rack system, engineering, people, and equipment behind the mountain railway, while historic equipment around the property—including the original 1866 locomotive commonly called Peppersass—extends the interpretation outdoors.
The main building also contains the ticket office, food court and convenience counter, gift shop, restrooms, and a wraparound observation deck. These facilities make the operator’s requested 45-minute arrival window useful rather than dead time, especially for first-time visitors who want to understand the railway before climbing the mountain.
The station is open year-round except Thanksgiving and Christmas, but hours change by season and the museum does not publish a separate daily schedule. Admission to the museum is free; a train ticket is a different purchase.
