About McHenry County Historical Society & Museum
McHenry County Historical Society & Museum occupies a historic native-limestone Union school building with an 1870 section, a 1948 gymnasium, and a modern addition. Its current brochure describes more than 11,000 square feet of exhibit space covering county history from the Pleistocene era through the twentieth century, including social history, agriculture, architecture, rotating artifacts, and larger objects.
The site extends beyond the main galleries. The Society preserves the Gannon Log Cabin, West Harmony School, an early tourist cabin reconstructed inside the museum, and other historic structures and collections. The research library is a separate appointment-only resource; ordinary visitors should not assume they can walk in for family-history research during museum hours.
Current visitor pages publish Tuesday–Friday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m., but a separate museum-detail page still says Saturday 11 a.m.–4 p.m. This guide uses the newer planning and contact pages while telling Saturday visitors to verify. The museum also closes on named holidays, including Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving weekend dates, Christmas dates, New Year dates, and Good Friday.
