About Ouray County Ranch History Museum

Ouray County Ranch History Museum preserves the county's ranching heritage from the mid-1800s to today. Eleven rooms use family-donated tools, equipment, journals, photographs, clothing, furniture, tack, domestic objects, and oral-history-based interpretation to show how ranch and farm families lived and worked.

The museum began in 2006 after a two-volume ranching-history project and spent ten years in the Colona Schoolhouse. It moved to the historic Ridgway depot in 2016, putting ranching and railroad history side by side in the town that served as the Rio Grande Southern's birthplace and headquarters.

Displays include a schoolroom, Victorian bedroom, kitchen and pantry, land-and-water interpretation, family histories, tools and tack, regional Western-film material, and outdoor machinery including the 1968 True Grit jail wagon. The collection and room contents can evolve as donations arrive.

The current 2026 schedule runs May 22 through October 11, Wednesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday noon-4 p.m. Year-round tours are available by appointment. The official page publishes parking but not a complete step-free route, so visitors with mobility needs should call before travel.
