Pioneer Park is the setting for the entire Tanana Valley rail visit, not merely something nearby. The park contains the free Tanana Valley Railroad Museum and its preserved Engine No. 1, while the Fairbanks North Star Borough separately operates the Crooked Creek & Whiskey Island Railroad as a regular summer loop. Current borough information lists the loop at $3 for adults and $2 for children, seniors, and visitors with disabilities, with lap-held babies free.

Those two rail experiences must remain distinct. Restored 1899 steam locomotive No. 1 is operated by the Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad only on special occasions. The regular summer park train normally uses replica locomotive No. 67. Buying a park-train ride does not promise that No. 1 will be in steam, and seeing No. 1 operate does not turn every museum day into a scheduled excursion.

Beyond the trains, the borough describes Pioneer Park as a 44-acre historical theme park with Gold Rush Town, the Harding Car, the SS Nenana, museums, shops, dining, mini golf, carousel, playgrounds, and seasonal programs.
