The place

About Stephenson County Historical Museum

Stephenson County Historical Society operates a multi-building museum and arboretum at the former Taylor family estate in Freeport. The society says its mission, in cooperation with the Freeport Park District, is to preserve local and regional history through collections, conservation, and education.

The 1857 limestone Taylor House is furnished to reflect the family's early years and has operated as a museum since 1944. The campus also includes an Industrial and Toy Museum centered on more than 600 cast-iron Arcade toys, exhibits about Freeport manufacturers, a log cabin, a schoolhouse, changing displays, and an arboretum with more than 50 tree varieties and species.

Current summer hours are Thursday and Friday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon-4 p.m.; the last tour begins one hour before closing. The museum lists major-holiday and some special-event closures, including Labor Day. A live June 26 roadwork notice also warns that Carroll Avenue construction may block the driveway on some days, so normal hours alone are not enough for a trip-day decision.
