George Stuart moved from a canal showboat to construction of the opera house after the boat sank in 1869. The hall closed in 1924, restoration advocates organized in the 1970s, and a 1980 fire nearly ended the effort. The rebuilt venue reopened in 1997 and now hosts more than 75 events a year, with a live calendar that includes concerts, theater, open mics, education, and community uses.
