History

See full history

The Belen Harvey House, at 104 North 1st Street in Belen, New Mexico, was built in 1910 as a Harvey House — one of the Fred Harvey Company's chain of restaurants serving railway stations across the U.S. Southwest. For decades the building was believed to date to 1901 as the Santa Fe Hotel, but that theory was disproved in 2001 by an architectural engineer from the Office of Historic Preservation in Santa Fe. Designed by architect Myron Church in the Mission/Spanish Revival style, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and now operates as a museum run by the City of Belen. The restored Harvey House sits beside the still-active BNSF Belen Subdivision main line, and its exhibits cover local railroad history, the story of the Harvey Girls who staffed the company's eating houses, and a working model railroad — a walking museum with trackside views rather than train rides.
