About Chehalis Centralia Railroad Association
Roll out of Chehalis on an 18-mile round trip through the Chehalis River valley, winding past scenic hills and farmland and over wooden trestles spanning the river and its tributary streams. The volunteer-rooted Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum runs themed excursions — murder mystery dinners, escape-room rides, holiday trains, and a Polar Express tradition dating to 2012 — from its depot just off Interstate 5, with trains running again since 2024 under an agreement with Goose Lake Railway.

The Trains
The signature locomotive is Cowlitz, Chehalis and Cascade Railway No. 15, a 2-8-2 Mikado built by Baldwin in 1916 for Clear Lake Lumber Company logging service and sold to the CC&C in 1926 after repossession. Retired in 1955 and displayed in a Chehalis park, the 'Old Lady' hauled excursions from 1989 until major boiler damage sidelined her in 2019, and repairs continue — a 2024 evaluation of the museum's two steam locomotives put full restoration at an estimated $1 million per engine. When in steam, No. 15 burns about 100 gallons of oil and up to 1,000 gallons of water on a typical excursion. The museum has also cosmetically restored its depot and engine No. 6, is renovating its collection of 600-series passenger cars, and plans to trade a never-installed turntable to the Northwest Railway Museum for a 1950s Pullman coach.

The route began under the Puget Sound & Willapa Harbor Railway, which operated it from November 1915 through the end of 1918, and the excursion trackage is former Milwaukee Road line. The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1986 by Chehalis citizens inspired by a visit from the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, and its founding project was rescuing Baldwin 2-8-2 No. 15 — known locally as the 'Old Lady' — from Recreation Park, where the engine had stood on display for more than three decades. Restoration at the Mt. Rainier shops in Mineral cost roughly $100,000 in grants, donations, and volunteer labor and was completed in April 1989, with excursions beginning that summer over Weyerhaeuser-owned track; the Port of Chehalis helped purchase the rails for the railroad in 1996 with a $420,000 state transportation grant. The operation rebuilt after the December 2007 floods with a $1.5 million FEMA grant, weathered an insurance-driven suspension in 2022, and resumed train rides in April 2024 under a joint operating agreement with Goose Lake Railway — selling more than 10,100 excursion and event tickets in 2025, with roughly 80 percent of riders coming from outside Lewis County.
