About Connecticut Trolley Museum

Riders board restored electric trolleys for a 1.5‑mile (2.4 km) demo line that traces the former Hartford and Springfield Street Railway’s Rockville Branch through East Windsor, Connecticut. The museum operates daily from February through December, running a minimum of two different cars each day and often rotating three or four, with unlimited rides included in admission. Founded in October 1940, it is the oldest incorporated museum dedicated to electric railroading in the United States.

History

The Connecticut Trolley Museum is founded in October 1940, making it the oldest incorporated museum in the United States devoted to electric railroading. Fourteen years later, in 1954, the Connecticut Electric Railway Association is organized and begins restoring trolley service on the former Hartford and Springfield Street Railway Rockville Branch. Since that revival, the association has operated the museum’s 1.5‑mile demonstration line and continues to manage the site in East Windsor, Connecticut.

The Trains

The museum runs a 1.5‑mile (2.4 km) demonstration line on the former Hartford and Springfield Street Railway Company Rockville Branch, following the historic right‑of‑way that once stretched from the Main Fish Market to Rockville, Connecticut. Operating cars that visitors can ride include Montreal Tramways sightseeing car 4, Springfield Terminal combine car 16, New Orleans Public Service closed car 836, Fair Haven and Westville Railroad open‑air car 355, Boston Elevated Railway Type 5 car 5645 and Connecticut Company closed car 1326, while the restoration shop works on additional pieces such as Connecticut Company Birney Safety car 3001 and Boston Elevated Railway PCC 3100. The collection also featured a Canadian National Class Z‑1‑a electric locomotive delivered in 1996, which was transferred to the Halton County Radial Railway in 2023.
