History

DeQuincy owes its existence to the rails: the Kansas City Southern completed a line from Shreveport to Lake Charles in 1897 that ran through and split at the future town, which incorporated in 1903. The depot that now houses the DeQuincy Railroad Museum followed in 1923 — a Mission Revival structure of the larger, architecturally ambitious 'urban depot' type, and one of only three such urban railroad stations still standing in Louisiana, alongside Shreveport's Central Railroad Station and the Texas and Pacific depot in Bunkie, all of them on the National Register of Historic Places (DeQuincy's was listed on September 22, 1983). The museum was established in the depot in 1974 with railroad artifacts from the Kansas City Southern, Missouri Pacific, and Union Pacific railroads, and its grounds host the annual Louisiana Railroad Days Festival on the second weekend of April. In 2013, Union Pacific welcomed DeQuincy into its Train Town USA registry, an honor shared in Louisiana only with Natchitoches and Bunkie.
Around the Depot
DeQuincy is the northernmost city in Calcasieu Parish, a community of about 3,100 within the Lake Charles metropolitan area of southwest Louisiana. Founded in 1897 as a railroad town where new lines met, it has never strayed far from those roots — the Kansas City Southern and Union Pacific railroads remain principal employers, and the timber industry has long been vital to the local economy. Louisiana Highways 12 and 27 cross at the center of town, putting Sulphur and Lake Charles an easy drive south and DeRidder to the north.
