The Trains
Official equipment pages identify GE 70-ton diesel-electric 54 as continuing in passenger and work-train service and ALCO S-4 1055 as primary power for most excursions. The passenger collection includes coaches 123 and 155, combine 102 Green Lake, and open-air car 124 Downeast Breeze; actual assignments vary. Davenport 53 is a switching locomotive. Caboose 2608 is described for work trains and occasional Touch-a-Train rides, not ordinary excursion seating. Russell snowplow 82 and Maine Central steam locomotive 470 remain restoration projects and are not promised operating equipment.

See full history
The route originated as the Maine Shore Line Railroad in 1884 and later became part of Maine Central's Calais Branch. Through trains once connected inland cities with steamer service to Mount Desert Island, and the Bar Harbor Express served the region until passenger service contracted and ended in 1960. Volunteers formed the Downeast Rail Heritage Preservation Trust in 2005, restored state-owned track from Washington Junction, and began public excursion service in 2010. The organization continues preservation and track work while operating the present Hancock-based ride.
