The Trains

Geared logging steam is the signature motive power: the Durbin Rocket excursion has been powered by a Climax or Heisler geared logging locomotive, and since 2015 the railroad also operates the geared steam fleet of the Cass Scenic Railroad, whose trains climb from Cass to Whittaker Station, Bald Knob, Durbin, Spruce, and Walnes. Additional excursion consists serve the Elkins-based trains — the New Tygart Flyer, Cheat Mountain Salamander, and Mountain Explorer Dinner Train — running over the state-owned West Virginia Central and Durbin Railroad trackage.

History

See full history

The Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad is a combined heritage and freight railroad operating in West Virginia and Virginia. It runs the Durbin Railroad and the West Virginia Central Railroad — both owned by the West Virginia State Rail Authority — as well as the Shenandoah Valley Railroad in Virginia. A milestone came in 2015, when the company took over operation of the historic, geared-steam-powered Cass Scenic Railroad, which the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources had previously run as part of Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Today the railroad fields a family of mountain excursions: the New Tygart Flyer, Cheat Mountain Salamander, and Mountain Explorer Dinner Train out of Elkins, trains from Durbin, and the Cass Scenic Railroad's climbs from Cass to destinations including Whittaker Station and Bald Knob.
