About Lehnis Railroad Museum
The Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum and Brownwood Visitor Center interprets railroad history in Brownwood, Central Texas, and the American Southwest. The City museum grew from thousands of artifacts collected by longtime Santa Fe employee Martin 'Buster' Lehnis and Frances Lehnis. Inside are railroad memorabilia, equipment, photographs, stories, dining-car china, operating model layouts in multiple scales, and a hands-on children's area. Outside, visitors can enter a 1931 Santa Fe caboose, a 1929 Pullman superintendent's car, and the century-old Kress Depot. A separate miniature train carries adults and children on Saturdays when weather and operations permit.

Martin 'Buster' Lehnis worked for Santa Fe for nearly 50 years and, with Frances Lehnis, assembled thousands of railroad artifacts and operated a 7.5-inch-gauge railroad on their farm. Their collection—including a 1931 Santa Fe caboose, 1929 Pullman superintendent's car, and Kress Depot—became the foundation for a City transportation museum. TXDOT approved a construction grant, Brownwood supplied matching funds, volunteers prepared the exhibits, and the museum opened September 14, 2007. It now preserves the regional railroad story while also serving as Brownwood's visitor center.
