Around the Depot
Brownwood is the seat of Brown County in the Texas Hill Country, a city of roughly 19,000 set beside Pecan Bayou, one of the major tributaries of the Colorado River of Texas. It is home to Howard Payne University, founded in 1889, and during World War II it hosted the U.S. Army's Camp Bowie, which peaked at more than 80,000 soldiers. Seven miles north of town, Lake Brownwood and its 1938-vintage state park offer fishing, camping, boating, and waterskiing.
