About Nebraska Railroad Museum

The Fremont Dinner Train carries passengers along the historic Fremont‑to‑Hooper line, tracing a scenic loop that follows the original 1869 route of the Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad. Riders experience period‑styled dining car service while the train glides through Nebraska’s rolling prairie, offering views of preserved depots and vintage rail infrastructure. The excursion remains operational despite recent ownership changes, and the accompanying museum interprets the railroad’s lasting impact on American railroading.

History

The Nebraska Railroad Museum interprets the story of the Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad, whose original tracks date to 1869. The museum formerly operated in Fremont, Nebraska, before arranging to relocate to the Burlington Railroad Depot in Nebraska City after BNSF Railway donated eight acres and two thousand feet of track. Plans called for the new facility to open in 2022, but a legal dispute culminated in a judge’s ruling against the city in May 2023, leaving the museum’s operational status uncertain. The Fremont Dinner Train and the Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad continue to run after the segment from Fremont to Hooper was sold to Mike Williams.

The Trains

The museum’s former collection included a Union Pacific DDA40X “Centennial” locomotive, which the museum decided to sell while inventorying its assets. Its historic excursion operation ran the Fremont Dinner Train and the Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Railroad along a scenic loop that followed the original 1869 route between Fremont and Hooper, a line recently sold to Mike Williams.
