About Nevada Southern Railway

DBA / customer-facing ticketing site for the rides operated by Nevada State Railroad Museum Boulder City (same operator, distinct online-booking storefront on WooCommerce). Listing kept as a separate row because some discovery sources and ticket links point here rather than to boulderrailroadmuseum.org. railroaddata returns this URL for two different IDs (Nevada Southern Railway + 'Nevada State Railroad Museum').

The Trains

Excursions are usually powered by Union Pacific EMD GP30 No. 844, the diesel famous for forcing UP's steam locomotive 844 to be renumbered 8444 between 1962 and 1989; the roughly 125-ton unit carries a turbocharged V16 producing 2,250 hp and was donated to the museum and refurbished in Union Pacific colors. It hauls historic equipment on the 7-mile round trip, including a caboose passengers can ride in. The museum also hosts a 7 1/2 in (190.5 mm) gauge miniature railroad whose one-eighth-scale trains carry children and adults.

History

See full history

The Nevada Southern Railway is the public excursion brand of the Nevada State Railroad Museum Boulder City, an agency of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Its trains run on the Boulder City Branch Line, the historic route laid to support construction of the Hoover Dam, and the State of Nevada acquired the tracks and right of way from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1985. Excursion operations began in 2002, carrying passengers on a 7-mile, 45-minute round trip behind historic railroad equipment, with options to ride in the locomotive cab or caboose and even to operate a train by reservation. The branch's connections have also been restored in the modern era: the bridge over US Route 93, out of service since the highway's 1998 widening into Interstate 515, was replaced as part of the Interstate 11 project, and in April 2018 a grade separation near Railroad Pass Casino re-linked Boulder City and Henderson by rail.
