About New Jersey Museum of Transportation, Inc.

The Pine Creek Railroad carries historic narrow‑gauge equipment along a 3 ft (914 mm) loop inside Allaire State Park, New Jersey. Trains glide past the restored Allenwood and Freneau stations, a 1910 Union Newsstand, and a former car barn, offering seasonal rides such as the Easter Bunny Express in April, Haunted Halloween trains in October, and Santa Special service on December weekends. Operated by the New Jersey Museum of Transportation, Inc.

History

The New Jersey Museum of Transportation was founded in 1952 when two railroad enthusiasts bought a Baldwin 0‑4‑0T locomotive from the Raritan River Sand Company, marking the museum’s first acquisition. Later that same year, facing steep property‑tax increases, the organization created the not‑for‑profit Pine Creek Railroad Division and relocated its operations from a 2.5‑acre site on Route 9 in Marlboro to its present location in Allaire State Park. In 1985 two Civil‑War‑era Patentee Class 2‑2‑2T steam engines were discovered off Long Branch, and on September 25 2004 a U.S. District Court granted the museum custody of the submerged locomotives, a unique addition to its collection.

The Trains

The museum’s Pine Creek Railroad operates a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow‑gauge line in Allaire State Park, looping adjacent to the former Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad right‑of‑way. Its historic roster includes the Baldwin 0‑4‑0T engine purchased in 1952 as Pine Creek No. 1—later overhauled for Disneyland as #4 Ernest S. Marsh—and two Civil‑War‑era Patentee Class 2‑2‑2T locomotives recovered off Long Branch in 1985 and placed in museum custody in 2004.
