History

See full history

The Richmond Railroad Museum occupies Hull Street Station, a depot the Southern Railway built in South Richmond to replace Mill Street Station on the opposite bank of the James River. After closing to rail traffic, the building endured damage from several James River floods in the years before Richmond completed its flood wall in 1995. The station belongs to the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, which restored it and has operated the Richmond Railroad Museum on the site since 2011, filling the old depot with exhibits and a collection of rolling stock that keep the city's railroading past on display.

Around the Depot

The museum sits in South Richmond, across the James River from downtown Richmond, Virginia's capital. Built at the fall line of the James, the city carries layers of history: Patrick Henry delivered his "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech at St. John's Church, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and around 1900 it ran one of the world's first successful electric streetcar systems. Jackson Ward remains the city's traditional hub of African American commerce and culture.
