The Trains

The line was worked by a single historic car: a 1930s-era W5-class streetcar, number 756, built for Melbourne, Australia. The City of Savannah purchased it for about $207,000 and spent roughly $100,000 more converting it to a hybrid drive, with an onboard biodiesel-fueled generator and batteries powering its motors — effectively making it a self-propelled diesel railcar. Nicknamed "Dottie" after the Savannah DOT that completed the project, the car ran over former freight tracks set in cobblestones east and west of City Hall, and since the service's suspension it has been stored in the Georgia State Railroad Museum's roundhouse.

History

See full history

Savannah's River Street Streetcar was a heritage line that traced the city's long transit lineage: horsecars first ran in Savannah in 1869, electric streetcars followed in 1890 and lasted until August 26, 1946, and the riverfront trackage later carried Norfolk Southern's local freight run, the River Street Rambler, until 2003. The city bought the River Street branch right-of-way from Norfolk Southern in 2004 for roughly $600,000 and relaunched rail service over the abandoned, cobblestone-set tracks beside the Savannah River. The streetcar debuted during the Climate Action Parade on December 9, 2008, and began regular operation on February 11, 2009, shuttling between six stops along River Street. In 2015 the car ran only nine days before a mechanical failure on January 16 suspended service; the shutdown became an indefinite cessation, with trolley-replica buses taking over and no formal abandonment ever declared. The vehicle is now stored in the roundhouse at the Georgia State Railroad Museum.
