Rochelle Railroad Park grew out of a railfan tradition at one of the Midwest's busiest crossings: the double diamond where the Union Pacific and BNSF mainlines between Chicago and points west intersect on the southwest side of Rochelle, Illinois — a four-track junction known as NX Crossing, on lines once belonging to the Chicago and North Western and the Burlington. Before the park existed, train watchers parked beside an interchange siding in the northern quadrant of the crossing, often dangerously close to the track and with nothing to keep trespassers off the rails. The city responded by building a dedicated park in the eastern quadrant, with an elevated viewing platform topped by a gazebo-style roof, picnic tables, a re-created hobo jungle, a display of strap rail, a preserved Whitcomb switching locomotive built by the Whitcomb Locomotive Works of Rochelle, restrooms, and a small model railroad shop. The park is open around the clock for train watching from its observation area, with a live scanner monitoring both railroads' frequencies and a webcam streaming from the platform roof. In September 2024, Union Pacific's restored 4-8-8-4 Big Boy 4014 made a public display stop at the park during its Midwest tour, drawing thousands of railfans.
