About Rockhill Trolley Museum

Rides aboard restored trolley and interurban cars travel the historic Shade Gap Electric Railway on the East Broad Top Railroad grounds in Rockhill Furnace, Pennsylvania. The museum’s collection, begun in 1960 with Johnstown Traction #311, includes a Newark, New Jersey PCC Car #6 and Iowa Terminal Railroad Snow Sweeper #3, all operated on a short line that showcases early 20th‑century electric transit.

History

The Rockhill Trolley Museum is founded in 1960 as a nonprofit dedicated to collecting and restoring trolley, interurban, and transit cars. At its inception the organization operates under the corporate name Railways to Yesterday, leasing property from the East Broad Top Railroad’s Shade Gap branch. The museum later adopts the name Rockhill Trolley Museum to emphasize its connection with the town of Rockhill Furnace. It remains open seasonally from May through October and for special holiday events, sharing volunteers and labor expertise with the adjacent East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company.

The Trains

The museum’s collection includes Johnstown Traction #311, the first car acquired in 1960, as well as Public Service Coordinated Transport (later New Jersey Transit) Presidents’ Conference Committee Car #6 from Newark, New Jersey, and Iowa Terminal Railroad Snow Sweeper #3. These vehicles operate on the historic Shade Gap Electric Railway, a branch of the East Broad Top Railroad that the museum leases for demonstration rides. The trolley line runs alongside the East Broad Top tracks at the Rockhill Furnace site, providing visitors with rides on the restored interurban equipment.
