About Shelburne Museum
The Round Barn stands as a striking gallery space at Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont, where visitors explore special exhibitions within its three‑story, 80‑foot‑diameter interior. Constructed in 1901 by Fred “Silo” Quimbly in Passumpsic, the barn was relocated to the museum in 1985‑86, its massive silo segment air‑lifted by helicopter and rebuilt with new materials. The structure’s historic design, featuring feed chutes and a central silo, offers a vivid glimpse into early twentieth‑century agricultural innovation.
History
The Shelburne Museum in Vermont spreads its collections across dozens of historic structures. Among them is the Round Barn, built in 1901 by Fred "Silo" Quimbly in Passumpsic and relocated to the museum grounds in 1985-86 — its silo segment air-lifted into place by helicopter.
The Trains
The museum’s rail collection includes the steam locomotive Central Vermont No. 220, a historic 1900‑era engine preserved as a static display. Also on view are the 1890 Grand Isle private rail car and the 1915 Shelburne Depot car, both maintained for exhibition rather than operation. No active track or scheduled train service is offered at the site.
