About Stuhr Museum Railroad Town
Wander Railroad Town, the Stuhr Museum's living history village in Grand Island, Nebraska, where many original period structures recreate an 1890s prairie community — among them the house where actor Henry Fonda was born in 1905. Exhibits in the Stuhr Building, a New Formalism design by architect Edward Durell Stone, trace the pioneers who settled the Central Nebraska plains, on grounds that served as filming locations for Sarah, Plain and Tall and My Antonia.
History
The museum was announced in November 1960 as the Hall County Museum, made possible by a $25,000 donation from Leo Stuhr, a local farmer and politician from a pioneer settler family; after Stuhr died in 1961, the institution was renamed in his honor during planning in 1963. The 1891 Stolley House was moved to the grounds in 1965, the same year the board shifted the site to southwest Grand Island and construction began, and after a flood delayed the opening, the Stuhr Museum was officially dedicated in July 1967. Its main exhibit building was designed by architect Edward Durell Stone and built by Geer-Melkus Construction. The living history village, Railroad Town, gathers many original period structures — including the house where Henry Fonda was born in 1905 — to evoke an 1890s prairie settlement, and films such as Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991) and My Antonia (1995) were shot at the museum. A narrow gauge steam locomotive, White Pass and Yukon Route 69, once ran on the museum's 3-foot-gauge Nebraska Midland Railroad before being traded back to its namesake railway in 2001. A $7.4 million renovation finished in 2015, and the museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 29, 2015.
Nearby
Grand Island, Nebraska's fourth-most-populous city and the Hall County seat, lies a few miles north of the Platte River in central Nebraska. German settlers founded the community in 1857 beside the island French traders called La Grande Isle, and the Union Pacific Railroad's arrival in 1868 brought trade, locomotive service facilities, and rapid growth. Since 2010 the city has hosted the Nebraska State Fair, which drew record attendance of more than 300,000 in 2024, and its parks include Stolley Park and the George Clayton Hall County Park.
