The Trains
Steam power here means Southern Railway No. 154, a G class 2-8-0 Consolidation built in 1890 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works, delivered to the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway as its No. 466 and renumbered 154 when the Southern Railway was formed in 1894. Restored after decades on display, it became the oldest operating Southern Railway steam locomotive and debuted on the Rambler in 2010. No. 154 made its last run on December 24, 2024 and was removed from service for its Federal Railroad Administration 1,472-day inspection and overhaul.
History

The Three Rivers Rambler is a Knoxville excursion train along the Tennessee River, operated by the Knoxville and Holston River Railroad, a subsidiary of Gulf and Ohio Railways. From a depot at 2560 University Commons Way, trains roll past Volunteer Landing and beneath the Henley Street and Gay Street bridges to the Three Rivers Trestle, built in 1913, where the French Broad and Holston rivers come together to form the Tennessee — a round trip averaging about 90 minutes. The operation's signature story is Southern Railway No. 154, a Consolidation built in 1890 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works for the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway. After ending its career as a yard switcher in Knoxville in 1953 and sitting on display at Chilhowee Park, the engine was donated to Gulf and Ohio Railways in 2008, restored to become the oldest operating Southern Railway steam locomotive, and pulled its first passenger train for the Rambler on July 3, 2010.
