History

See full history

Thronateeska Heritage Center incorporates the Southwest Georgia Historical Society, organized in 1969, and the Albany Junior Museum, founded in 1959 by the Junior League of Albany, which merged in 1974 to form the Thronateeska Heritage Foundation, Inc. The nonprofit was incorporated that same year as a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to historic preservation and science education in Southwest Georgia. In 1975 the 1913 Union Station depot, saved through Thronateeska’s effort, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wetherbee Planetarium opened in the former Railway Express Agency building in 1980 and was rebuilt in 2008 as a new planetarium and science museum that incorporates architectural elements of the 1926 Central Georgia Roundhouse, featuring a 40‑foot full‑dome HD system described as the first of its kind in the world. In 1982 the Tift Warehouse (built 1857), the REA building and Albany’s last brick street were added to the National Register, completing the Albany Railroad Depot Historic District.
