About Calera Depot Museum & Gift Shop

The Calera Depot began as the Southern Railway combination depot at Wilton, Alabama. Combination depots handled passengers and freight in one building, and the surviving structure preserves that divided role. Heart of Dixie moved it roughly 13 miles to Calera in January 1984 and adapted it as the railroad museum’s ticket office and indoor exhibit building.

Inside, the waiting and ticket area anchors train-day logistics while the freight room holds artifacts, photographs, station furnishings, and other displays interpreting Alabama railroads. The gift shop supports the museum and sells train-themed items and a hand-operated souvenir penny design; the official shop page says it does not currently offer mail-order or online sales.

This is part of the active railroad property rather than a separate downtown museum. Visit before the boarding call or after the train, and distinguish the accessible ramped ticket area from the stepped freight-room exhibits. Public hours, appointments, event access, and gift-shop times can differ, so use the current site or phone before a non-Saturday trip.
