About Heart of Dixie Rolling-Stock Collection

Heart of Dixie’s rolling-stock collection spans equipment built from the late 19th century into the early 21st century. The official catalog groups steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, freight equipment, cabooses, cranes, derricks, handcars, and other maintenance vehicles. It includes ordinary working tools as well as uncommon equipment such as a dome observation car and early diesel designs.

Operational status must be handled carefully. The official diesel collection explicitly contains both operational and static examples, and individual history pages do not necessarily describe today’s excursion assignment. The museum also says cars are open to the public only when they are being used on an excursion; restoration and static-display equipment remains closed.

The outdoor collection is valuable before or after a train because it shows how a working preservation railroad differs from a polished indoor gallery. Stay in public areas, keep clear of active tracks and shop work, and use the collection pages for identification rather than climbing onto equipment.
