About Chattanooga Choo Choo Terminal Station

Chattanooga Choo Choo occupies the city's former Terminal Station at 1400 Market Street. Construction began in 1906, the first train reached the completed building on December 1, 1909, and the station soon handled nearly 50 trains a day. The last passenger train departed on August 11, 1970; the preserved complex reopened in 1973 and entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The current property is open to the public without requiring a Hotel Chalet stay. Its official directory lists Terminal Station, the gardens and Great Lawn, restaurants, bars, shopping, entertainment venues, an arcade, Songbirds Museum and rail-themed hotel rooms. This is not an operating passenger station and the displayed locomotive is not a public ride; use it as an architectural and railroad-history extension after TVRM.

The complex does not publish one universal daily schedule because each restaurant, shop, museum, event venue and hotel keeps its own hours and ticket rules. The property directs drivers to affordable nearby parking and specifically identifies lots near Market and Choo Choo and southwest of Station Street and Rossville Avenue. A complete property-wide accessible-route description is not published, so visitors who need step-free routing, elevator access or a particular tenant entrance should contact the property or business before traveling.

What stands out

Stand beneath the terminal dome

Use the restored interior as the trip's architectural anchor while allowing for private events or tenant-controlled access.

Trace the station timeline

Connect the 1906-1909 construction, 1970 final passenger departure and 1973 preservation reopening.

See preserved rail context

View the display locomotive and train-car setting honestly as static interpretation rather than a second operating ride.

Choose one current tenant

Use the official live directory to add food, Songbirds Museum, shopping or entertainment without relying on a stale complex-wide list.

Pair it with the train

Why it belongs in a Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum trip

This ranks first because it is the strongest independent rail-first continuation of a TVRM day: pair an operating preservation railroad with the city's monumental former passenger terminal. Allow 45-90 minutes for the public terminal, gardens and display setting, then add only the tenant or meal whose current hours fit.
