About Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center

Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center is the main National Park Service orientation point for Chickamauga Battlefield at 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe. It is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Inside are exhibits on the Battle of Chickamauga and Campaign for Chattanooga, the Fuller Gun Collection, a bookstore and an orientation film shown every half hour.

Chickamauga Battlefield and its visitor center are free. The park's $10 per-person entrance fee applies only to Point Park on Lookout Mountain, not this stop. After the film, visitors can follow a self-guided vehicle route among monuments, markers and battlefield landscapes; the wider park is generally open sunrise to sunset, and current alerts, weather and daylight should control how much of the route is attempted.

The visitor center, lobby restrooms and theater are fully accessible. The driving tour can largely be experienced from a vehicle, but waysides, monuments and exhibits beyond the pavement use mixed grass, dirt and relatively flat paths. Wilder Tower's upper views require stairs; the park supplies an accessibility video instead. NPS also lists assistive listening, audio description, braille and captioned media at the visitor center, making this the more reliable mobility and sensory-access stop in the nearby pair.

What stands out

Watch the orientation film

Begin with the half-hour presentation so the battlefield drive has geographic and historical structure.

Study the Fuller Gun Collection

Use the indoor museum collection and battle exhibits as the most dependable all-weather portion of the visit.

Drive selected battlefield stops

Choose stops by daylight, mobility and interest rather than treating the full protected landscape as a quick walk.

Interpret Wilder Tower honestly

View the monument from accessible ground or use the NPS video when the stair climb is not appropriate.

Pair it with the train

Why it belongs in a Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum trip

This ranks second because it is less train-specific than Terminal Station, but it adds a rigorous regional-history layer: Chattanooga's rail junction shaped the 1863 campaign that the museum, film and battlefield explain. Allow 60-90 minutes for the center and one or two nearby tour stops, or two to three hours for a fuller driving route.
