About Clarke Historical Museum
Clarke Historical Museum occupies the landmark former Bank of Eureka building in Old Town. Eureka High School teacher Cecile Clarke developed a local-history and Native basketry collection, then purchased the vacant bank building and established the museum there in 1960. An adjacent wing, Nealis Hall, houses significant Northwestern California Native basketry and regalia collections.
The museum frames Humboldt County through Native cultures, gold-rush settlement, logging and lumber, ranching, farming, maritime livelihoods, Victorian life, work, home, and changing community stories. That makes it a strong independent companion to Timber Heritage: the speeder and Samoa shops preserve one industrial system, while the Clarke places that system inside a wider regional history.
The current 2026 site lists Wednesday through Sunday hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a suggested donation of $10 per individual or $30 for a group of five. People enrolled in CalFresh or EBT programs and visitors with Native ID are not asked for the suggested donation; Clarke, NARM, and ROAM members are listed as free. Special evening programs can extend hours, but their dates and access are separate.
The reviewed museum pages do not publish a complete wheelchair route, entrance-width, elevator, seating, sensory, restroom, or dedicated-parking specification. Exterior photographs show a downtown corner and curb spaces, but photographs are not parking or accessibility evidence. Call 707-443-1947 before an access-dependent visit and check live Old Town conditions before driving.
What stands out
Read the former bank as an artifact
The 1890-era Bank of Eureka building gives regional commerce and civic growth a physical setting before any display case is opened.
Enter the wider timber story
Logging, lumber, transport, work, settlement, and daily life connect directly to the rail and shop history preserved across the bay in Samoa.
Approach Native collections with context
Nealis Hall holds major Northwestern California Native basketry and regalia collections; follow current museum labels and community-connected interpretation.
Use changing 2026 exhibits
The museum advertises new and rotating 2026 programs, so the live exhibit and events pages are more reliable than a dated gallery photograph.
Pair it with the train
Why it belongs in a Timber Heritage Association Crew Speeder Rides trip
The checked baseline driving route from Timber Heritage’s Samoa shops to Clarke Historical Museum is about 6.4 kilometers (4.0 miles) and 9 minutes. An event in Eureka may put the speeder closer, but the calendar’s exact boarding location controls. Keep enough margin for the Samoa Bridge, downtown traffic, parking, and a possible speeder wait.
