The Trains
The operating ride vehicle is Arcata & Mad River Railroad Crew Speeder No. 60, built by the railroad in the late 1930s as a crew maintenance and inspection car and occasionally used as an ambulance. Timber Heritage volunteers began restoring it in 2008 and returned it to public rides in 2009 after more than 300 hours of work. A rebuilt 1959 Ford six-cylinder engine replaced the prior 1953 Ford industrial engine during 2017-2018. A similar Pacific Lumber crew car with its motor removed serves as a passenger trailer. Licensed 2015 photographs show the exact No. 60 and trailer at Loleta, but do not establish today’s consist, boarding steps, seating arrangement, capacity, restraints, or mechanical assignment. Full-size locomotives and passenger cars are collection and future-project assets; they are not the promised vehicle for these 2026 rides.

Vance interests began building the Samoa mill, railroad, roundhouse, shops, depots, and cookhouse complex.

Timber Heritage Association traces its organizational roots to the Northern Counties Logging and Interpretive Association, formed in 1977 around the Fort Humboldt logging exhibit. The organization adopted the Timber Heritage Association name in 2004 and expanded its mission to preserve local timber artifacts, develop a museum, and pursue a Humboldt Bay excursion. It began using the former Hammond Lumber Company roundhouse and shops in Samoa in 2007, restored Crew Speeder No. 60 beginning in 2008, and started public speeder rides in summer 2009. The Samoa industrial site dates to the 1890s, when the Vance interests built railroad, mill, depot, roundhouse, shop, and cookhouse infrastructure; the association became owner of the surviving Vance/Hammond shop buildings in 2023. A separate 2023 agreement with the Great Redwood Trail Agency enabled major track rehabilitation in Samoa and Eureka. The association reports about 200 ties, more than 400 plates, more than 800 spikes, hundreds of tons of ballast, grading, vegetation removal, and geometry and hazard work before the short Samoa section returned in 2026.
