Inside the same 1913 station used by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, this National Park Service center explains Cumberland’s canal terminus, transportation crossroads and C&O Canal story without requiring another drive.

About C&O Canal Cumberland Visitor Center

The visitor center is the most efficient interpretive add-on to a Cumberland train day because it occupies Room 100 of the Western Maryland Railway Station. Exhibits cover canal construction, cargo, locks, mules and crew life, with a Paw Paw Tunnel model and a life-size section of a canal boat.

The current published schedule is Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., with Monday and Tuesday closures plus listed federal-holiday closures. Those hours do not automatically match the railroad timetable, so visit before check-in when the center is open rather than assuming it will remain open after the train returns.

The center offers maps, ranger contact, Junior Ranger material, restrooms and drinking water. The National Park Service identifies an accessible entrance, but visitors with a specific mobility, sensory or restroom need should call before travel rather than inferring that every Canal Place route or historic feature is barrier-free.
