About Eagle Iron Works & Curtin Village
Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village interprets the longest-operating charcoal iron plantation in central Pennsylvania’s Juniata Iron District. Restored and reconstructed buildings show how cold-blast, charcoal-fueled iron production shaped both the landscape and the people who worked within it.
The site combines the furnace complex with the Federal-era Curtin Mansion, workers’ houses, and the carriage of Pennsylvania Civil War governor Andrew Gregg Curtin. The contrast between the ironmaster’s furnished home and the workers’ village makes the social history as important as the machinery.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission owns the site, and the nonprofit Roland Curtin Foundation operates it. Grounds are available for self-guided visits dawn to dusk, while scheduled guided tours enter the mansion and furnace complex. Donations support the volunteer program even though no ordinary tour fee is charged.
