About Kankakee Fish & Wildlife Area
Kankakee Fish & Wildlife Area is an Indiana Department of Natural Resources property protecting more than 4,000 acres of open water, marsh, riparian timber, flooded fields, and 11 miles of river near North Judson.
The landscape is a surviving part of the Grand Kankakee Marsh, once hundreds of thousands of acres before widespread late-nineteenth-century drainage. State acquisition began in 1923, and later additions expanded habitat for wildlife and public outdoor recreation.
The property is best suited to self-directed birding, fishing, paddling, or condition-dependent walking rather than a conventional visitor-center attraction. There are no designated trails; visitors use available mowed lanes and should ask staff which areas are open.
Admission is free and the property is normally open 24/7. The office is open weekdays 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Central. Current habitat work causes intermittent vehicle closures in the 10 Mile Road unit, and hunting seasons or wildlife-resting areas impose additional restrictions.
