About Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum

Diesel‑powered round‑trip excursions depart weekends from North Judson, Indiana, and travel to LaCrosse, Indiana, offering scenic views of northern Indiana’s rail‑rich landscape. Seasonal Polar Express runs add a holiday‑themed experience, while the museum—housed in a former Erie Railroad facility—remains open Saturdays year‑round. Visitors explore historic freight equipment, including Chesapeake and Ohio Railway #2789, a 2‑8‑4 Kanawha steam locomotive, and enjoy ticket purchases through FareHarbor.

History

The organization began in 1988 as the Miami County Steam Locomotive Association, Inc. In 1961 it received Chesapeake and Ohio Railway 2‑8‑4 Kanawha locomotive No. 2789, which remained on static display in West Side Park, Peru, Indiana for roughly two decades. After reforming in 1985 the group moved the locomotive to North Judson in 1989 to start restoration work, but abandoned the project and renamed the entity Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in 1992.

The Trains

The museum’s collection includes Chesapeake and Ohio Railway 2‑8‑4 “Kanawha” steam locomotive No. 2789, displayed alongside a range of historic freight cars. Its operational diesel‑powered tourist train runs round‑trip excursions between North Judson and LaCrosse, Indiana, on the former Erie Railroad right‑of‑way.
