The place
About Old Jail Museum
The stone jail served Carbon County from 1870 until 1995. Its 27 original cells, basement isolation spaces, warden’s quarters, thick walls, and guard turret survive inside a building designed to function as a county prison rather than a modern museum.
The guided tour centers on jail life and the Molly Maguire trials and executions, including the disputed handprint in Cell 17. The museum appropriately presents the legal and labor history as controversial rather than reducing it to a ghost story.
The Dart/McBride family owns and operates the museum. Because the historic structure has stairs, limited parking, guided-only admission, and first-come capacity, practical planning matters as much as the history.
