The Trains
Excursions are diesel-hauled with vintage coaches, including open-window cars for unobstructed gorge views. The parent Reading Blue Mountain & Northern also operates Budd-built Rail Diesel Cars and a steam program (Reading T-1 #2102), though the regular Lehigh Gorge scenic runs are diesel-powered.
History
See full history
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway began excursions in 2005 and is operated by the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad. Trains depart Jim Thorpe and run along the Lehigh River through Lehigh Gorge State Park on former main-line trackage — a 16-mile round trip into terrain once shaped by the anthracite and canal era.
Around the Depot
Jim Thorpe is a restored Victorian town in the Pocono foothills, packed with mountain shops, inns, and trailheads. Pair the ride with Lehigh Gorge State Park's rail-trail biking and waterfall hikes, or a stroll through the historic downtown and the Asa Packer Mansion.
