About Truman Farm Home

Truman Farm Home is the Grandview unit of Harry S Truman National Historic Site. The surviving house and 11-acre landscape preserve a small part of a family farm that once reached roughly 2,000 acres, offering a direct setting for understanding Truman before his military and political careers.

Harry Truman's maternal grandparents, Solomon and Harriet Louisa Young, claimed an initial 80 acres in 1844. The original farm home was built in 1867, and Truman's family moved to the farm when he was four. As a young adult, he left a bank job and worked here from 1906 to 1917.

The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset for self-guided visits, with an audio tour available in the NPS app. Home-interior tours are free, first come, and scheduled Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with a noon-to-1 lunch closure. Weather or staffing can cancel tours, so the NPS advises calling on the visit day.
