About Belton, Grandview and Kansas City Railroad
A short‑line heritage train departs from Belton, Missouri, and traverses the remaining few miles of former Frisco track that connect Grandview and Belton, offering open‑air views of the Kansas City metropolitan outskirts. The excursion is pulled by a 1956 EMD GP9 diesel, formerly Huron and Eastern Railway #102, and is accompanied by historic passenger cars and observation equipment.
History
The Smoky Hill Railway and Historical Society forms in 1964 to accept a donated 1918 Baldwin 2‑10‑0 steam locomotive that had been sold to Eagle‑Picher Mining Company in 1952 and retired by that firm in 1957. That same year the society opens a railway museum at the Trough‑Nichols siding in Lenexa, Kansas, later moving to a downtown Lenexa “house track” until 1973, then relocating to the Kansas City Southern “old team track” at 226 West 3rd Street in Kansas City, Missouri, where it becomes the Kansas City Railroad Museum. In October 1980 the museum is forced to disperse its collection to Richards‑Gebaur Air Force Base and five other sites; the society moves engine 1632 to Belton, Missouri, in 1991 and, by about 1995, consolidates there and begins short‑line passenger service under the reporting mark SHRX as the Belton, Grandview and Kansas City Railroad. The line operates a 1956 EMD GP9 locomotive for excursions, and by July 2013 the museum’s roster lists two static steam locomotives, two diesel locomotives, six freight cars, three cabooses, six maintenance‑of‑way cars and three passenger cars.
The Trains
The railroad runs a short segment of a few miles between Grandview and Belton, Missouri, on former St. Louis‑San Francisco trackage that once extended from Kansas City to Springfield. Its active fleet includes a 1956 EMD GP9 diesel (ex‑Huron and Eastern #102) that hauls excursion trains, while the static collection features a 1918 Baldwin 2‑10‑0 steam locomotive (former Frisco #1632), a 1923 ALCO‑Cooke 2‑8‑0 (ex‑Okmulgee Northern #5 named “Tommy”), a 1939 Plymouth Locomotive Works ML‑8 switcher, and the Kansas City Southern lightweight observation car “Hospitality.”
