The nonprofit began in Lenexa, Kansas, in 1964 as the Smoky Hill Railway and Historical Society. It later operated the Kansas City Railroad Museum in the former Kansas City Southern Third Street Yard before its collection dispersed around the metropolitan area. The society purchased part of Burlington Northern's former Clinton Branch in 1990, ran a first special excursion that fall, and began regular Belton trains in 1991. The surviving route is part of the former Frisco Blair Line or High Line.
