About Branson Scenic Railway

The Branson Scenic Railway (reporting mark BSRX) runs vintage diesel‑powered excursions through the Ozark Mountains, departing daily from the historic Branson depot. Trains travel a roughly 40‑mile (64 km) round‑trip, heading north toward Galena, Missouri, or south toward the Barren Fork Trestle in Arkansas, depending on Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad traffic. The line follows the former Missouri Pacific White River route, offering panoramic views of rugged Ozark terrain.

History

The line that the Branson Scenic Railway uses was built as the White River Railway between January 1902 and December 29 1905, requiring numerous trestles and tunnels to cross the Ozark terrain. After becoming part of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the tracks were sold to the Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad in 1992. In 1993 Alan Kamp, Illa Kamp and Tom Johnson created the Branson Scenic Railway under a lease with MNA, beginning excursion service that runs from March through December. Early in 2024 the original founders retired and sold the operation to American Heritage Railways, which now owns the railway and plans to expand its offerings.

The Trains

The Branson Scenic Railway runs vintage diesel‑powered trains, marketed as the Ozark Zephyr, on former Missouri Pacific White River trackage that extends north from Branson to Galena, Missouri, and south from Branson to the Barren Fork Trestle in Arkansas, producing an approximate 40‑mile (64 km) round‑trip through the Ozark Mountains. The line operates on standard‑gauge track owned by the Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad, with daily departures from the historic depot in downtown Branson.
