The Trains

Current public products say Buffalo Southern Railroad provides diesel-electric locomotives, with assignment and route subject to change. BC&J’s passenger collection includes enclosed coach No. 7133, a former Long Island Rail Road P54 “Ping Pong” car built by American Car & Foundry in 1927, and snack car No. 7136, along with open-air seating and caboose accommodation. The operator’s equipment page contains some season-specific 2025 notes, so a particular car should not be promised for 2026 unless the booked product identifies it. The coach and caboose each have a restroom; the caboose, snack car and coach are heated while open-air cars are not.

Planning began for a railroad linking Buffalo and Jamestown.

1872

The Buffalo & Jamestown Railroad was incorporated.

The line connection was completed.

1881

The Erie Railroad acquired the Buffalo & Southwestern.

1952

Regular passenger service on the route ended.

1960

The Erie and Lackawanna merged, beginning another era of route ownership.

1982

Buffalo Southern Railroad began operating the Erie County-owned line on May 1.

Plans for the route date to 1867, and the Buffalo & Jamestown Railroad was incorporated in 1872. The connection was completed in 1873, the company reorganized as the Buffalo & Southwestern, and the Erie acquired it in 1881. Regular passenger service ended in 1952. After the Erie and Lackawanna merged in 1960 and later reorganizations threatened the corridor, Erie County acquired the line. Buffalo Southern Railroad began operations on May 1, 1982. BC&J now interprets that regional railroad heritage through nonprofit public excursions from Hamburg.
