About Western New York Railway Historical Society

The Western New York Railway Historical Society is a preservation organization with three distinct public properties: the Heritage DiscoveRY Center at 100 Lee Street in Buffalo, the Orchard Park Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Depot, and the Williamsville Lehigh Valley Depot. The Trains

The Society preserves railroad stations, artifacts and static equipment rather than operating a public passenger consist. The Williamsville property documents a Norfolk & Western caboose, Lehigh Valley diesel cab No. 252 and Railway Express Agency equipment. Orchard Park preserves passenger-depot and freight-house fabric. The Heritage DiscoveRY Center interprets railroad, steel, industrial and maritime history through exhibits and collections. None of those artifacts should be described as a guaranteed operating locomotive or excursion train.

1911

The present Orchard Park BR&P depot was built; it opened to the public in 1912.

1980

The Western New York Railway Historical Society was founded in August.

1982

The Orchard Park depot was deeded to the Society in July.

1990

The Williamsville Lehigh Valley depot became Society property.

2026

The Society continues operating three visitor properties and its twice-yearly Train & Toy Show.

The Western New York Railway Historical Society was founded in August 1980 to preserve the region’s railroad heritage. It acquired the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh depot in Orchard Park in July 1982 and the Williamsville Lehigh Valley depot in 1990. Those two surviving stations now anchor the Society’s community programming, while the Heritage DiscoveRY Center at 100 Lee Street expands the interpretation to Buffalo’s railroad, steel, industrial and maritime history. The Society also organizes its major twice-yearly Western New York Train & Toy Show at the Hamburg Fairgrounds.
